Local skaters look for edge - Cape Code Times

The unseasonably warm temperatures this week might not feel like ice skating weather, but that won't stop thousands of synchronized skaters set to compete this weekend in the 18th annual Cape Cod Synchronized Skating Classic at the Gallo Arena in Bourne.

The 108 teams and more than 2,000 competitors make the event, hosted by the Bourne Skating Club, one of the largest non-qualifying synchronized skating competitions in the country, according to co-chair Catherine Walton. Hayden Synchronized Skating and its senior level Haydenettes, the most decorated synchronized skating club in the country, will be among the many competitors.

The 20-time U.S. champion senior team features North Falmouth native Emily Albert, while the Hayden novice team, the Ice Mates, includes Falmouth resident Stephen Murray.

The Haydenettes have won bronze medals in each of the past three World Synchronized Skating Championships, the most recent in Sweden in April. The Ice Mates have won three straight national championships in the novice division. (more)
